Probably all calculated. Couldn't ask for better publicity.

Certainly possible. I can't tell you how many people I have heard say they have never seen the show before but are making plans to start watching it.

There's no such thing as bad publicity.

Certainly possible. I can't tell you how many people I have heard say they have never seen the show before but are making plans to start watching it. Why? Would people you know actually start watching a show because of its hateful message? how SAD. I can't tell you how many people I know that have never even heard of the show until now and don't plan on ever watching it. Personally, I will change the channel should it ever show up on my tv.

Probably because the show doesn't have a hateful message. None of that stuff in the article is ever on the show. The show is about love of God and family. And of course, making duck calls. I watch it all the time.
I don't agree with Phil's views on homosexuality, but I support his right to believe as he wishes. He said those who practice homosexuality sin in the eyes of God. He didn't say he hates them. In face, he said quite the opposite.
I think abortion is a sin and I'm not ashamed to say so. That doesn't mean I hate people who seek out and obtain one.
One has to be able to separate beliefs from hate. There is a difference.

One also has to realize when an agenda is being pushed. Personally I have no interest in the show, even less now.

It's one of the love of God and family - nothing hateful about it. I don't happen to think that is a bad thing. You may and that is your right. Not everyone likes the same things. Just don't ask to borrow my "Quack Attack" sweat shirt!

Of course they'll get a spike in the ratings from this. People will be curious to see if the views expressed in the interview will be pervasive in the show. And if so, how they manifest themselves.

I watched the show a few times but it isn't for me. In the first year it seemed pretty honest but now it is very contrived, scripted and definitely with a religious agenda. They do have a lot of viewers and I think it is safe to say that the viewers of this show don't mind gay love being equated to beastiality and the promotion of marrying girls as young as 15 because thats a good age to get a woman...etc. Phil said a lot of things and he has the right to say what he wants. Freedom of speech is a good thing but he has to also own those words and understand that not everyone is happy happy happy about his misogynistic, homophobic ways. And btw @greeneyedlady, while I don't have a quack attack t-shirt I do have a Willie Chia head sprouting some serious beard in my little girls room...teens!!!

Fans no longer give a quack about "Duck Dynasty."
TV Line reports that 8.5 million people tuned in for the fifth season premiere of "Duck Dynasty" on Wednesday (Jan. 15), down from 12 million viewers who watched the fourth season premiere.
In the highly sought after age demographic of 18-49, only 4.2 million tuned in.
When Phil Robertson insulted black people and gay people back in December, creating a huge uproar in the media, fans passionately defended the patriarch, but the ratings haven't held up.
Could this be the beginning of the end for "Duck Dynasty?"

It would seem they lost the people that aren't yokels, and that the networks trepidation has been borne out. It seems they held onto the Fox demographic, old white people.

I wonder how much that the revelation of the reality series being scripted hurt them. Seems people didn't realize that before the dust up.

It's scripted?! No Way! You would have heard much more bigoted, misogynistic crap far sooner if it wasn't.

Reality shows are good for one season. At best. That's when things are still loose and you get more of the personalities that actually inspired putting it to camera in the first place. The first season of The Osbournes was great. Everything after that pretty much sucked. And so it goes.
TV shows in general have a life span of about 5 years. So the Duck Dynasty guys are in their twilight anyway. Their merchandising is incredible.

The thing about reality shows is that I really don't want to KNOW these people. I just want to watch them do stupid shit.

I'm just not sure the drop off can be entirely attributed to the old man's interview.

They may have lost the people that thought they were just nice fun country folk, until it became obvious they were just the usual cliche we all think of.
