Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has announced 3,000 reserve troops will be deployed to help tackle raging bushfires across the country. Defence Minister Linda Reynolds said this is the first time this has happened in Australia's history. Temperatures have surpassed 40C (104F) in parts of south-east Australia. Officials had warned that Saturday was set to be a "dangerous day". Since September, fires in Australia have killed at least 23 people. Speaking at a press conference on Saturday, Mr Morrison told reporters: "We have seen this disaster escalate to an entirely new level." An emergency warning was issued for areas of eastern Victoria that told remaining residents it was now too late to leave. "The safest option is to plan how you will safely take shelter indoors as conditions worsen," the warning said, adding: "Leaving now would be deadly." Residents were instructed to attempt to take shelter indoors or in a large clearing or body of water. Dozens of people are missing and some 1,500 homes have already been lost this fire season. www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-australia-50986363

This is absolutely horrendous, my brother lives in Canberra and there is a constant thick layer of smoke surrounding them , they are being advised NOT to go out, WTF, also I have numerous family in and around the Sydney area, my cousin sent pictures of the fire literally in the bush outside his back yard, he's had to evacuate and god knows what has happened to him home, my mum is due to fly there next week I really don't want to her to go but she is insisting, what can ya do?

It's so sad, heading into the hottest season as well. A lady I work with is from Australia and her family has been evacuated.

One of my Aussie friends told me that the fire was just metres from her house but the wind changed direction and saved her home.
I read that the smoke plume is as wide as Europe, not sure how true that is but I can believe it, the total area destroyed is as large as England.
