Washington (CNN) -- The Supreme Court will tackle the contentious issue of same-sex marriage, agreeing to hear two constitutional challenges to state and federal laws dealing with the recognition of gay and lesbian couples to legally wed. In a one-page order on Friday, the court took on what will be one of the most important issues in its history. The decision to review the matter came just weeks after voters approved same-sex marriage in three states. Oral arguments will likely be held in March with a ruling by late June. One appeal to be heard involves the federal Defense of Marriage Act or DOMA, which denies federal benefits to same-sex couples legally married in their own state. The second is a challenge to California's Proposition 8, a voter-approved referendum that took away the right of same sex-marriage that previously had been approved by the state's courts www.cnn.com/2012/12/07/us/court-marriage/index.html?c=&page=1

I have no problem with same sex marriages. It has no affect on my life who someone else chooses to marry. I honestly don't understand why it bothers so many people. Mind your own business. I imagine all the people who oppose it would be upset if others started sticking their nose into their personal lives.

Exactly. Is it legal in Canada? Yes and no, depends on the Province and they have different names for it as well as different benefits.

You know this is all about religion imposing itself on government. That in and of itself is enough to find on the side of gay marriage.
Beyond that, this issue has more to do with prejudice than anything else. If you were to look at the prevailing religious context you see that homosexuality carries the same punishment as other transgressions, death. If adulterers are allowed to marry in the church for instance why not homosexuals? Prejudice.

It wasn't that long ago that interracial marriage was illegal using almost the same arguments. This too shall pass.

Like they say. If you don't agree with gay marriage, don't get gay married.

The word "marriage" doesn't need to be corrupted any worse than it already is. Marriage is and should be between a man and woman. I could call the sky a clock but that doesn't make it so.
Having said that, I do not care if there is a particular word that describes the union of two gay people but why does it have to be something that already has a specific meaning? Is it just because they are bitter or wish to push an agenda? Call it whatever you want, but it's not marriage.
Also- Like Crusher, I don't care who boofs who. Just keep your hands out of my wallet and it's all good.

I recently watched a documentary about the Lovings. The interracial couple who fought it to the Supreme court & finally won. It took something like 7 years. It was quite interresting. Even though Federal court mandated the states repeal their laws making it illegal some of the southern states didn't. The last one was either Alabama or Mississippi (I forget) & didn't do it until 2000. That blew me away.

So a gay couple that has been together 20 years doesn't deserve the same tax break as a heterosexual couple...please explain why.

I never said any such thing. I'll let them have all of the "benefits" of marriage. But it's not "marriage". Heterosexuals are screwing up marriage just fine on their own, they don't need any more help.
They need a name that is their own.

You can't call a Caucasian an African American or visa versa. They are what they are. Marriage is what it is.

I really don't understand the adherence to a word. Married is married. As in "I am not married to either of these ideas." marriage is simply a union social or legal. In the religious sense it has been between one man and one woman. Wait a minute... I think we need to take a look back to biblical characters to check.
a. Lamech had two wives - Genesis 4:19. b. Esau had three wives - Genesis 26:34 & 28:9.
c. Jacob had four wives - Genesis 29:28 & 30:4-9.
d. Gideon had many wives - Judges 8:30.
e. Abijah had 14 wives - II Chronicles 13:21.
f. Mitts gramps had 12 wives.
So it's not between one man and one woman? Well not unless your a politician fishing for bible belt votes
The noise about gays being married in nothing more than bigotry. Get over it.

I would deny them nothing except the use of that particular word. There's no bigotry there.
