SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) — A Southern California high school basketball coach has been suspended and faces accusations of mercilessly running up the score after his team won a game 161-2, one of the most lopsided scores in state history. Arroyo Valley High girls’ coach Michael Anderson was suspended for two games after the victory last week against Bloomington High. Anderson said that he wasn’t trying to run up the score or embarrass the opposition. His team had won four previous games by at least 70 points, and Bloomington had already lost a game by 91. “The game just got away from me,” Anderson told the San Bernardino Sun. “I didn’t play any starters in the second half. I didn’t expect them to be that bad. I’m not trying to embarrass anybody.” He says if he had it to do again, he’d have played only reserves after the first quarter, or “I wouldn’t play the game at all.” But Bloomington coach Dale Chung says Arroyo Valley used a full-court press for the entire first half to lead 104-1 at halftime. “People shouldn’t feel sorry for my team,” Chung said. “They should feel sorry for his team, which isn’t learning the game the right way.” Anderson has served one game of the suspension, a game his team won 80-19. He’ll return after sitting out one more. “He’s a great X’s and O’s coach,” Chung said. “Ethically? Not so much. He knows what he did was wrong.” Source

The purpose of sports isn't just winning. It's about building character. It's about far, far more than numbers on a scoreboard. However, if a team plays you fair and square and you get pounded, well, you need to take your lumps. It's all part of learning and being an athlete. On the other side, if you have grossly and resoundly dominated, then, there are ways to slow down your game and run the clock which will end the game faster.

However, I do not think the coach is obligated to put in the second or third string and tell them to not play hard or score. If the second team is in and they are still scoring, then that is more than fair in my opinion. But, again, the offense can be slowed down in such a way to run the clock. A full court press is ridiculous and very Over the Top in my opinion at this level. And, the other team could also have just chosen to forfeit the game at the half or third quarter or wherever too.

And, as for running up the score, yes this is a gross example and sounds like he truly did run up the score. But, if the other team is far ahead and simply that much better, then is it really any worse to lose 50 to 2 or 100 to 2? Kind of doesn't matter. You got trounced. Oh well. And, if the other coach is a jerk, then you still need to teach your team to keep their composure and have good sportsmanship even when the other team does not.

What was his option? Should the refs just call the game once there's a large enough discrepancy. It sounds like bullshit to me. Don't want you team to get the shit kicked out of them be a better coach. Train them harder.

I agree that the other coach had options as well. He could have just forfeited at some point. And I also agree u can't just expect your third string not to try..
