There's an article about the webcam stuff somewhere out there. I'll try to find it later.

This isn't the article I originally read, but here's one from C-net that speaks to the issue of webcams turned on remotely: link

If you called a kid in school a nasty name it would be classed as bullying. Why the distinction for cyber land ? I just called you a name. Am I bullying you Dom? I think kids are mean, not always is it bullying.

Bully, bully, bully. The word is over used.

Types of bullying (source: National Safe Schools Framework ) Face-to-face bullying (sometimes referred to as direct bullying) involves physical actions such as punching or kicking or direct verbal actions such as name-calling and insulting. Covert bullying (sometimes referred to as indirect bullying) is less direct, but just as painful. It means bullying which isn’t easily seen by others and is conducted out of sight, such as excluding people from groups or spreading lies or rumours. Because it is less obvious, it is often unacknowledged by adults. Cyberbullying occurs through the use of information or communication technologies such Instant Messaging or chat, text messages, email and social networking sites or forums. It has many similarities with offline bullying, but it can also be anonymous, it can reach a wide audience, and sent or uploaded material can be difficult to remove. Most people who cyberbully also bully off-line. ~ So pretty much any time you do something that hurts someone elses feelings, you are bullying them according to the definition above. So lets all be nice okay? :

I hold the opinion nobody on the internet can bully you unless you allow them to do so. It's worked for me.

I think it is real. 6-7 years go I had someone who started tracking me through the internet and posting real information about me and making really bad comments everywhere. I had to close many of my accounts. They posted under names like "someone who knows you" and other names like that. Back then there weren't so many blocks and privacy settings as there are now. If someone knows you in real life and decides to go after you, it can be a real pain. On the old MSN board I was attacked by a few posters, once really bad. People that track back through years of old posts to crucify you on things that you were going through in your life and posted about just have way too much time on their hands. That happened a lot on MSN. I remember apple used to get attacked there a lot too. Glad to be on this board now though with a "refinement" of the group. I have chatted with many of you daily for quite a few years now.

I have chatted with many of you daily for quite a few years now. I think the MSN days were pretty brutal. It was all new and many people (including myself) abused the freedom at times. Some more than others. Lucky for me one of the very first posters I met at about the same time I met seattlegirl was a poster on a music board and he was also an IT person. He showed me some tricks on how to avoid being identified and how to identify people. Otherwise it is really scary how easy it can be to find someone. I'm glad you like it here and feel safe chica. That makes me happy.

We are a pack mentality species. We may not think we are actively in the gang but subconsciously we are. I'm not. I'm with you. :D

If push came to shove and you had to make a decision to fight or flight in a war situation for example. You have then joined a gang wether you like it or not. Everybody would have to make that same stand. I think that would be you imposing a collective identity arbitrarily, rather than me choosing to embrace it. So in fact a person that doesn't wish to follow, leads. See how it happens? :D

We say it all the time. " people are like sheep" And the majority are like sheep in any given situation and in regards to cyber or anyother type of bullying. Yes, one generalises but he doesn't reasonably expect his generalisation to apply in every case. Cyber bullying, like cyber sex, is just a new medium for an old behaviour. I agree. There are plenty of people in real life that jump on board any typically bad behavior simply because others are doing it rather than using their own judgement and making their own decision to do so. why would being behind a screen make this characteristic any less common?
