The Associated Press and local media reported the shooter, an unidentified adult male, had been in the main office at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Two handguns were recovered from the scene. Its unclear how many victims there were and if there were other fatalities. At least one victim had numerous gunshot wounds. Mayor Mark Boughton said several victims had been taken to local hospitals. But details were sketchy. The Newtown Bee reported that a police officer carried a seriously wounded child from the building. Groups of students — some crying, some holding hands — were being escorted away from the school by their teachers. Some students were still in the school at 10:30 a.m., after it was placed on lock down, parents said. The school is in a residential, wooded neighborhood about 90 minutes north of New York City. It has has 39 teachers and about 650 students. A reverse 911 call went out to parents warning of an incident. Parents were being reunited with children. But, NBC Connecticut reported, police were searching the area behind the school with guns drawn. Terese Lestik was relieved to find her five year old daughter, Eva, unharmed. "I heard a boom-boom,'' Eva said of the gunshots she heard earlier. "I'm horrified,'' said Terese Lestik. "I just pray for whoever is hurt." Alexis Wasik, a third-grader at the school, said police were checking everybody inside the school before they were escorted to the firehouse. She said she heard shots and saw her former nursery school teacher being taken out of the building on a stretcher, but didn't know if the woman had been shot. "We had to walk with a partner," said Wasik, 8. One child leaving the school said that there was shattered glass everywhere. A police officer ran into the classroom and told them to run outside and keep going until the reach the firehouse, The Hartford Courant reported. Dozens of state troopers are on the scene assisting local police. Heavily armed police gathered in front of the school around 10:45 a.m., and a number of stretchers were set up. |

Nearly 20 people died Friday in a school shooting in Newtown Connecticut, a law enforcement source with knowledge of the investigation told CNN.
At least 10 of the dead at Sandy Hook Elementary School were children, the source said.
A parent who was inside the school at the time of the attack said she heard what sounded like at least 100 rounds being fired. She said she saw two school employees who had died.

18 children and 8 adults. 24 yr. old wearing all black. One of his parents were shot dead prior to the shooting

Orwellian, nice go. Most likely he wasn't a criminal till the act. When you say criminals what scenario are you putting forth. Was the nut that sprayed the theater a criminal prior to the act? IDK - But I do know that all of these criminals choose victims that are unable to defend themselves. That's the common, cowardly thread. another common thread would be the weapon of choice. |

He reloaded a number of times. He also killed his mother that worked as a teacher at the school.

If the weapon is the problem, how do we get them out of the hands of criminals? Is it at all realistic to say that we can confiscate every gun?.. A common train of thought says that the demand for drugs will always bring dealers to the table to provide those drugs. Therefor we should legalize and tax those drugs. Similarly, there will always be a demand for guns. And someone will always try to provide them. The problem as I see it is the gun but only when combined with a disturbed mind. What is easier to fix? The gun situation or the disturbed mind? I'm completely disinterested in fixing the disturbed mind. They belong behind bars or in a padded room or whatever. But again I ask, is it realistic to get ALL guns out of everybody's hands? |

Parents of children at the school for kindergarten-to-fourth-grade students gathered at a fire station down the street from the school building to await news of their children.
Helicopters hovered over the school building and scores of cars were parked on lawns up and down the street, reflecting the hurried response of police, parents and officials after the shooting took place around 9:30 a.m. local time.
Reports of the shooting and aftermath have been trickling in. I cannot imagine the horror these poor parents must have gone through waiting to find out if their child was alive or dead.
My heart goes out to each and every person touched by this horrible tragedy.

I seems to me this nut lashed out at these kids because his mother worked there. He shot and killed her and set off for the school she worked at.

People keep asking why he did it. It was the most spiteful thing he could do. He took what was most dear to his mother, and the school.

Each of the children were shot multiple times. Between three and seven times each. The medical examiner said the assault rifle was used primarily. it had a thirty round magazine.

I heard a story of a teacher that hid several children in the closet and then directed the murderer to the gym at which point he shot and killed her. A hero.
