Deaf Belgian twins, 45, win right to die after losing sight.
Published January 14, 2013 - Reuters - via Fox News
Identical Belgian twin brothers, born deaf, becoming blind and unable to bear not being able to see and hear each other, had their wish to die granted in a case testing the boundaries of legal euthanasia.
Doctors gave the 45-year-old twins lethal injections after they had had a cup of coffee together and said goodbye to each other, a spokesman at the UZ Brussel hospital said on Monday.
"It's not simply that they were deaf and blind that they were granted the right to euthanasia. It is that they could no longer bear being unable to hear or see the other," he said.
Belgium is one of few countries where euthanasia is legal.
A patient must be an adult, capable of making a judgment, and the wish to die must be voluntary, overwhelming and repeated. The patient must also be suffering persistent and unbearable mental or physical pain beyond medical help.

Doesn't this open the door for Euthanasia because of depression? I've always considered it acceptable if there is physical pain.
They were "unhappy"....

Wow that is huge. I believe in euthanasia for elderly, or terminal patients. I wouldn't want to be deaf & blind so I can see this case too when it comes down to quality of life versus quantity.

Quality of life, you can see physical pain in a person. How do you measure quality of emotional life? How many people come OUT of depression?

It's your life. If you don't want it you should be able to end it.

Yes I get it. but it's not my decision to make, it's yours whatever your state.
This whole me being able to stop you from exercising your liberty harkens back to the notion that only god has the right to make that decision.
And that suicide is a sin. It's bullshit.

There are too many of us as it is. You want out? Fine. This whole keeping terminal patients alive just so the health industry can cash in is criminal.

The people who take the life of the person should have some guidelines no? Often times people go through depression only to come out of it and be happy they are alive.

I'm not saying you cannot seek treatment for depression, or be referred for treatment. I am saying if you make the decision to die you should be able to. They should have kits to do it yourself. Guns are messy.

People often use high speed trains around here. That's pretty messy too. Yeah, we have that here too. There is a code here that no newspapers or radio's report suicides. When the trains are stopped on a clear day, we know why.

My friend's dad threw himself off there. Yeah, we have that here too. There is a code here that no newspapers or radio's report suicides. When the trains are stopped on a clear day, we know why. Yeh, come to think of it they don’t report it here either. Everyone kinda knows when it happens though cos the stations are busy and it spreads by word of mouth. Surprisingly regular occurrence. Sad really. I know a man who jumped off a very high bridge. Thing is he lived. Now he is living the good life, ever so happy he isn't dead.

In San Francisco they call it "the north tower dive club". It's the one you most likely won't survive.

We have a lot of bridges around here, some are better than others for the dive club.

When I first heard the word Euthanasia I thought they were talking about gangs in Shanghai.

Not a big fan. I understand people wanting to do it though. I'm sorta curious about the whole getting a doc to do it for you. Seems like it would be way more entertaining to just go skydiving together and ziptie your hands together for the trip down.

I most often associate euthanasia with people who are so ill or disabled that they cannot kill themselves.

I'm all for allowing someone to bump themselves off, but not having someone else do it for them. That's murder.

The spirit of Dr. Jack compels you!
Able bodied people can do whatever they want to themselves. The law be damned. But if another person harms/kills that able bodied individual then they are culpable for the damages.

You never know what is going to happen. you may see a change that helps you feel better, heal, or you may become important to someone new. Maybe your perseverance inspires someone else. Maybe your caretaker has to spend an extra two minutes changing your diaper and avoids a car crash at the intersection. If you off yourself, she would've been killed in the crash because she wasn't at your place. Think of the impact your demise will have before asking someone else to feed you the rat poison in your cheerios.

People shouldn't be forced to suffer just to be an inspiration to others. That being said, maybe your caretaker dies in a crash because she took an extra two minutes changing your diaper. We can't second-guess destiny. In any case, we treat our pets with more compassion. We put them down because we don't want them to suffer. If a human being no longer wants to suffer, they should be allowed to opt out, and to shuck this mortal coil. If you're religious and feel that only God should be allowed to take your life, then don't participate. You have no right to take that option away from anyone else.

I know that people who have been injured in serious accidents often obsess about what if I had only done this or that the timing would have been different and the accident wouldn't have happened. It would seem to me that is a futile exercise.
