Twelve people have died and three others were critically injured as gunmen opened fire at the office of a Paris-based satirical newspaper today in an attack that France's president called a "terrorist operation." PHOTO: People stand outside the French satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo's office after a shooting, in Paris, Jan. 7, 2015.The shooting at the office of Charlie Hebdo was a "cowardly attack," said President Francois Hollande when he was at the scene this morning. "This is a terrorist operation against an office that has been threatened several times, which is why it was protected," he said, without going into the specifics of the police protection at the office in the center of Paris. Photos from the scene show a police car riddled with bullet holes. The newspaper had been targeted in the past over its content, often aimed at religious groups. French officials confirmed that there are believed to be three attackers, all of whom were seen in videos wearing black from head-to-toe. Their identities and affiliations have not been revealed but one of the men is heard screaming "Allahu Akbar," an Islamic phrase meaning "God is great," in one of the scene videos. This morning's turmoil punctured an otherwise normal day in the French capital, with the gunshots audible from nearby buildings, sending bystanders cowering. The masked gunmen were later seen fleeing the scene and hijacked a car, authorities said. They have not been caught and a search is underway for the shooters. The tragedy marks France's deadliest terror attack in decades. The government raised its terror alert to the highest level and reinforced security at houses of worship, stores, media offices and transportation. The New York City Police Department ordered extra security to the French consulate in Manhattan and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security said that they are closely monitoring the events in France and are ready to adjust their "security posture, as appropriate." Charlie Hebdo, a satirical newspaper, has come under attack before. Their office was firebombed in 2011 and its website was hacked after its cover featured the prophet Muhammad. Nearly a year later, the publication again published crude Muhammad caricatures, drawing denunciations from around the Muslim world. The cover of this week's issue of the newspaper focuses on a new book by Michel Houellebecq, “Submission,” which depicts France led by an Islamic party that bans women from the workplace. "France is America’s oldest ally, and has stood shoulder to shoulder with the United States in the fight against terrorists who threaten our shared security and the world," President Obama's statement read. "Time and again, the French people have stood up for the universal values that generations of our people have defended." Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper expressed sadness following the shooting. Stephen Harper : I’m horrified by the barbaric attacks in France. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. Source

Paris is a country of free speech, there are many ways to voice discontent. These terrorists are insane and full of religious hatred so vile it consumes them.
SUCH a violent religion, although violence has historically been a part of most religions.

A despicable attack. They of course attacked a "soft" target as opposed to the military. They also seem to value their lives above their cause. It was important to get away. I hope that the French authorities find them.

Muhammad himself had zero tolerance for criticism and particularly, satire. He ordered the killing of EVERY poet and satirist in Arabia who dared criticize him and his violent methods. The grand poetess--Asma, who wrote critical poems about Muhammad, was ordered killed by her own nephew. Arriving in the middle of the night in Asma's bedroom, the nephew had to shove aside a newborn baby who was asleep in the bosom of the mother before driving his javelin into Asma's heart. Ibn Is'haq--the earliest biographer of Muhammad writes, when the murderer nephew asked Muhammad what penance he should now do for the murder of his own aunt, Muhammad replied: "None. She was the enemy of Allah, of me and my religion"

Despite a shoot-out with armed officers, the gunmen escaped in a hijacked car and remained on the loose this evening. This left the French capital in virtual lockdown as police and soldiers flooded the streets to join the search. The three suspects were tonight said by Metronews to be all French citizens - a homeless teenage man aged 18, and two brothers aged 32 and 34. President Barack Obama offered U.S. help in pursuing the gunmen, saying they had attacked freedom of expression. But it also emerged that the White House had previously criticised Charlie Hebdo in 2012 over its Prophet Mohammed cartoon. At the time it had said that the images would be 'deeply offensive to many and have the potential to be inflammatory'.

Really? You are going to ignore the fact that police who initially camr on scene had to retreat because they had no weapons? Oh ok.

What those terrorists needed was to have their damn heads blown off on the spot. That is the only thing they understand.

There is NO MENTION of them not having guns and quite frankly its a stupid comment. The terrorists held a woman and child hostage to gain entry to the building and started shooting/killing people upon entering. There was a shootout with police when they left the building.

???
FRANCE is a well-policed state – les flics are everywhere. There are different police forces. The municipal police are just a small step-up from traffic wardens. The gendarmerie are the real and frightening police force. They are armed at all times, openly carrying guns and tasers on their belts. Their reputation as hard uncompromising officers is well deserved - the slightly bumbling bonhomie of Maigret has no place in reality. All their potential customers would be best advised to avoid confrontation with them.

A reporter for Britain's Telegraph newspaper in Paris told Sky News that the first two officers to arrive, who were apparently unarmed, fled after seeing gunmen armed with automatic weapons and possibly a grenade launcher. ~
Perhaps bike police should carry grenade launchers too snicks.
What a tragedy, I feel horrible for the families of these people so mercilessly gunned down in cold blood.

I feel for the victims' loved ones. And I feel for all people. When these violent acts occur so many agonize over the "why". People are people, period. Regardless of what religion terrorists attempt to justify their violence under and with, the bottom line is it's still people who are committing the maiming and killing.

Je suis Charlie!
I can't get the image out of my head. How that cold blooded killer walked over and shot the wounded officer in the head. It wrecks me.

Why does it "wreck" you? There is EVIL in the world. Why is that a surprise? Sure snicks, there is evil in the world. That does not mean I don't feel for these people and when I see that mans last seconds of life it bothers me. It should bother you too, or anyone capable of empathy, sympathy or compassion.

We had a Je Suis Charlie candle-light vigil in front of the French consulate last night. In bone-shattering -38 temps. Big crowd.

We had a gathering last evening at the Art Gallery, probably not as well attended as yours but none the less a show of unity and support.
